We've become quite fond of charred wood finishes in previous projects, and now that we have a chance to pick our very own siding finishes, we wanted to explore further. These tongue and groove red cedar boards get torched and sealed, and each board is left to cure and acclimatize on site. The technique is borrowed from a Japanese tradition of charring cypress boards (shou-sugi-ban or simply yaki-sugi) to build weather resistance and also ward off insects. More on the technique here. Aluminum trim helps to take care of the joints between the Hardie and our custom siding. As you can see, the deep black finish is intensely beautiful - we find ourselves returning to it over and over again in multiple projects.
